Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared that it will not be intimidated by politicians to undermine the 2019 general elections.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

The Commission also declared its resolve to work closely with the Police to ensure that the elections are free, fair and credible. Speaking, yesterday, at a parley with political parties organised by the Benue State Police Command in Makurdi, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue State, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, promised that the umpire body would avail all the parties and their candidates a level playing field in the exercise. Earlier, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Ene Okon, warned that the Police would not hesitate to arrest any politician caught encouraging thuggery and violence during the electioneering period. Represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Tunji Akingbola, the Commissioner said: “We will strictly enforce the Public Order Act, now Federal Act and anything or act by politicians or their proxy that would lead to a break of law and order would be decisively dealt with by the Police. According to him, “anyone caught defacing posters and billboards of opponent or engaging in hate speech or other actions or acts that could generate unnecessary political heat or cause serious problem to public order would obviously be made to face the law. “With the elections 89 days away, campaigns should be issues based, peaceful and devoid of all acts that could jeopardise the peaceful conduct of the elections.”

The president stated that such speculations by some Nigerians were untrue as there was no plan for such.

NWC begins reconciliation as Oshiomhole, Obaseki splits APC

There were indications on Wednesday that the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress were divided over the crisis in Edo State. This indication emerged shortly after the  Director General of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Salihu Lukman, called for the resignation of the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole. Lukman, in a statement in Abuja, said  Oshiomhole  should either   convene the party’s National Executive Council meeting or resign.  In a swift reaction, the APC National Vice Chairman (South-South), Hilliard Eta, in an interview with The PUNCH, dismissed Lukman’s statement, saying the director general was speaking for himself. But the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the APC, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, and the embattled National Vice Chairman (North-West), Inuwa Abdulkadir, backed the director general. Our correspondents gathered  that the organs of the party were not united on the issue of Edo State crisis. A chiefta...
